For some, where you start in your career isn’t really where you’re meant to end up. For Kathy Gibson, her transition from the legal profession to higher education to entrepreneurship was a humbling and eye-opening experience.
After years juggling the courtroom and a busy family, she decided to pursue a career that was a better fit for her life, at that time, but was equally stimulating and challenging. So, she set her sights on higher education. During her tenure as an educator and then a dean, Kathy became aware of the challenges faced by adjunct professors and universities in connecting for teaching positions. This realization lead her to turn her focus toward entrepreneurship and building a company to solve this problem. Today, Adjunct Professor Link is a company that connects higher education professionals with institutions seeking their expertise.
So, how did Kathy successfully transition between such wildly different careers, ultimately becoming a leader in higher education? She’s kept sight of a few important nuggets:
- It’s never too late to start a new career, especially with so many accelerator and training programs available.
- As an entrepreneur, take the time to really educate yourself on the nuances of funding, hiring for culture and obviously, the industry you’re operating in.
- Best practices for running a company can be learned from anywhere - family, friends, even yoga!
- Sometimes the best thing for your professional life is to spend some time away, focusing on your personal life.
Take a look at a few of the resources Kathy has relied on during her journey from lawyer to entrepreneur.
